Happy Mother's Day!

Sun May 8, 2022

Are you a mother? Ok, so if you aren't, do you HAVE a mother? Everyone does when they are born - as we know, all human life comes from mothers, even if they don't always stay with us as God designed them to.

Motherhood is the amazing calling that many women experience, so we celebrate these amazing women one day each year, and it was started here in the U.S. by a woman who never even had children, but to celebrate HER cherished mother :)

Mother's Day is always held on the second Sunday of May—similarly to how Father's Day is on the third Sunday in June.

Interesting, right?

But how DID the holiday start? According to an article in CountryLiving, Anna Jarvis, an activist who lived from 1864 to 1948, is credited with being the "mother" of Mother's Day. (Although, interestingly enough, she never had any children of her own.)

Anna's mother, Anne Jarvis, hosted clubs for moms in the 1850s to help them learn to properly care for their children in order to lower the infant mortality rate, according to National Geographic. After Anne's passing in 1905, Anna was determined to honor her mother's legacy. On May 10, 1908, Anna organized the first Mother's Day–related function in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia.

Anna's hard work to respect her late mother was so impressive that President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother's Day a national holiday in 1914. (He was also the one who decided it should fall on the second Sunday in May.)

So what is the best way to honor our mothers on this day? You could buy her something nice, like jewelry or chocolates. Or, better yet, you could ignore all the commercialism, and give your mom some flowers and a BIG hug :)
